The STA is proud to have many committees where members serve their colleagues as they do work the union needs done, and provide the voice of teachers to the community in many areas. Many members are active on these committees, and oftentimes committee work is the first entry point for union work. Members at all stages of their careers have made major contributions through committee work.  We have committees that are concerned with internal union matters, such as Executive Committee, Finance committee, Resolutions committee, STARA steering committee and the AGM delegation, and we have committees working on service to colleagues’ professional development and rights such as the Pro-D committee, STA Convention committee, Grievance committee, and Education Governance Committee. We have a political committee, called Political Action Public Response (PAPR) which steers the STA’s work during provincial and municipal elections and prepares campaigns during bargaining time. We are also inspired to work in various social justice areas, and have committees such as Anti-Poverty, Indigenous Education, Status of Women, International Solidarity etc., that do work in these areas both within the union and in response to how these are concerns in the community. These committees often organize special events for members, students, and the community.

We have two types of committees: Standing Committees and Ad Hoc committees. Standing committees have been created over the years by STA AGMs, and continue as permanent features of our Association (until they are potentially removed by another AGM). Ad Hoc committees are created by the executive committee from time to time in response to an emerging issue, and can continue as an ad hoc committee for several years as the issue persists, or can be converted to a standing committee by an AGM as the committee and the executive recommends. Current Ad hoc committees are Ad Hoc Green, Ad Hoc LGBTQ and Ad Hoc Members of Colour committees. All committees are a part of the STA, and work to strengthen our union.

Our committees are governed by the rules and regulations as set out in our Collective Agreement, Constitution & Bylaws and Policies & Procedures.  Meetings are governed by Robert’s Rules. Please feel free to review our Committee Meetings Procedures.
