Black Excellence Day: Friday, January 13, 2023

Black Excellence Day is a day to celebrate Black history, educate yourself about Black stories, Black art, and Black people in preparation for Black History Month in February.  

Black Excellence Day was established by the Ninandotoo Society and is celebrated annually on January 15th, or the Friday before if that day falls on a weekend or holiday in honor of the legendary civil rights activist Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who was born on January 15, 1929.   

It’s also a day to recognize and support the contributions of Black Canadians. Our history texts frequently fail to recognize the accomplishments of Black Canadians and their ongoing civil rights struggle. One resource in particular, from the British Columbia Black History Awareness Society (BCBHAS) shares the specific history of Black people in BC.  

The second annual Black Excellence Day event will take place on January 13, 2023. The event will again be held virtually to provide a meaningful, inclusive, and accessible experience for students across Canada.
