If you and/or a group of colleagues would like to include learning about residential schools as part of your professional development, you could apply to the STA Pro-D Officer for support in doing so.

Individual Book Study

  • You want to develop your understanding of residential schools in order to effectively support student learning.
  • You decide to read one of the books about residential schools suggested by the STA Indigenous Education Committee over the summer.
  • You apply for approval of the book/resource for professional development by completing the Professional Resource Application form. Be sure to include the date and a brief description of the inquiry the book supports. For example, “we will discuss ways to support student learning around cultural biases”.
  • Once the resource is approved, you complete the Individual Pro-D form to apply for reimbursement for purchasing the book.
  • You read the book over the summer.

Collaborative Book Study

  • You and a group of colleagues on your staff decide you need release time to develop understanding of residential schools in order to effectively support student learning.
  • You apply for professional development release time by completing the Pro-D Special Project form
  • If you are going to read a book as part of your collaboration time, you will use the Professional Resource application form to obtain approval of the book/resource before you purchase it. Be sure to include the date and a brief description of the inquiry the book supports. For example, “we will discuss ways to support student learning around cultural biases”.
  • Once approved, submit the Pro-D Special Project form for approval. Remaining Special Project funds, after release-time costs, can be used towards the purchase of the resource.
