I’m a secondary English and Spanish teacher with 25 years’ service in our district. I taught at Johnston Heights 1993-2003, and Fraser Heights 2004-2017. Last year I was your 2nd VP. I’ve been involved for many years in various committees at the local and provincial level, and have enjoyed numerous opportunities to do training across the province, and to even lead teams in international work.
The job of 1st VP and all table officers is to serve the teachers by providing full time support to teachers having difficulties of many kinds, by making sure the membership knows what is going on with their union, and by paying attention to contract issues so that the teachers can do what they signed up to do: teach!
As your new 1st VP, It is an honour to represent teachers’ voices, and to serve teachers with respect, confidentiality, curiosity and when possible, joyfulness in our struggle for a better world through public education.
I have been an STA member since 1990. I was a staff rep every year until 2001 when I was elected Grievance Officer of the STA. I did that for a year and, when I was re-elected the following year, it was as a Grievance/Health and Safety Officer. In January 2005, I was appointed to the staff of the BCTF as Health and Safety Officer. I returned to the classroom in February 2009 where I taught grades 3-6. In May 2017, I was again elected STA Grievance Officer. I have been in that position since September 2017.
