Members at all stages of their careers have made major contributions through committee work.

The STA has many committees where members serve their colleagues as they do work the union needs done and provide the voice of teachers to the community in various areas. There is a range in the work of committees.

We have committees that are concerned with internal union matters and we have committees working on service to colleagues’ professional development and rights. We are also inspired to work in various social justice areas, and have committees that do work in these areas both within the union and in response to how these are concerns in the community. These committees often organize special events for members, students, and the community.

List of Committees

All committees are overseen by the Executive Committee. In essence, the 36 committees of the Association are extensions of the Executive Committee. There are currently 36 STA committees that can be broadly categorized into three types: Standing Committees, Ad Hoc Committees and Steering Committeees.

Ad Hoc committees are created by the executive committee from time to time in response to an emerging issue, and can continue as an ad hoc committee for several years as the issue persists, or can be converted to a standing committee by an AGM as the committee and the executive recommends.

Join a Committee

There are numerous STA committees you may wish to get involved with. Teachers meet, vote on proposed actions, plan events, attend community events together, and make recommendations to the Executive committee.

The Executive Committee is elected at our spring General Meeting in May. Normally, other committees’ members are elected for 1 or 2 year terms at the STARA meeting in September. However, they can be elected at any STARA meeting throughout the year. All meetings of all committees are open to any member to attend as a guest, so why not come and find out what a committee you are interested in is discussing! Members may also be appointed to a committee by the Executive Committee to fill an absence.
