Candidates for Member-at-Large (3 to be elected)

Krystal Ng

Hello! My name is Krystal Hazel Tsun-Ying Ng and I’m a Grade 3 teacher at A.H.P. Matthew Elementary. My pronouns are she/her and I identify as a Chinese-Canadian. In the last 7 years as an STA member, I had the opportunity to be an active participant in the following:

•  – Member of the Global Majority Committee (2020-present)
•  – BCTF AGM Delegate (2023)
•  – Fall Representative Assembly Observer (2023)
•  – Chair of the Ad Hoc District Racial Equity Response Committee (2023-2024)

As a Chinese-Canadian, I feel proud to call myself a Surrey teacher as I have seen first-hand how our union can create change for the betterment of teachers in our district and beyond. As the Staff Rep at my school, I also have seen, heard, and experienced how racism continues to exist in our schools and that this reality can only be altered by adding more differing perspectives and voices to the table. As a Surrey teacher, I would like to humbly ask for your support to add my voice to the table.
I am putting my name forward for the Member-at-Large position because I would like to be the voice for those who are often silenced in our schools. I believe that in working together in our union, we can create meaningful changes and more fair and equitable opportunities for our members.
Thank you and I look forward to seeing and meeting you all on September 25th!

Corrie Shaw

Hello, my name is Corrie Shaw and i am currently in my 27th year teaching in Surrey. I have taught at both the high school and elementary levels and taught both classroom and LST. Also, I have been a staff rep for several years at both levels, currently the elementary level. This past year I have become more involved with the STA, attending the BCTF AGM, Bargaining Conference, and Summer Institute. I understand the challenges facing Surrey teachers and would like the opportunity to be part of the executive committee.

Since I began teaching in 1998 I have experienced the complexities of our classrooms continue to increase while supports for teachers and students decrease. I want to help address the issue of teacher burn-out, the recruitment of new teachers to our profession, age the retention of teachers who are struggling with the demands of the career.

At this point in my career I feel drawn and passionate about protecting public education and promoting improvements in teachers’ working conditions which are students’ learning conditions.
Like in wider society, the most vulnerable students are not being supported adequately to ensure success, putting untenable strain on our teacher colleagues.

I am committed to fighting for our public education system and the rights of my colleagues in Surrey and the rest of the province. I am a father of two elementary aged children and truly believe we need to stand up and fight for a stronger system for our teachers and students.

Thank you for your consideration.
With humility and respect,
Corrie Shaw

Gavin Slade-Kerr

I would like the opportunity to apply my skills and experience to the Member at Large position. I was the Health and Safety/Grievance Officer for 3 years. Last year, I was the chair of the Grievance Committee and worked extensively with the STA Grievance Officers in preparing for grievances, including those health and safety related. My previous career as a lawyer provides me with the knowledge and abilities necessary for this important work. This work involved interpreting our collective agreement, statutes, arbitrations, bargaining documents, letters of agreements, and more, then writing documents to prepare for grievances. I have also been on the STA Executive for 5 years, first as a Local Representative and as the Secretary/Treasurer. On the Executive, we meet at least every 2 weeks for 2-3 hours and discuss online daily how to resolve the important issues of our union and its members. I have advocated for Health and Safety Concerns to ensure that our union is demanding that our employer meet their legal obligations.

I have worked extensively for our union and would now like to do even more. In the past, I have been a member of the Finance, Indigenous and International Solidarity Committees, preparing professional opportunities for our members. I was also a member of the Joint District/STA SOGI committee, responsible for reviewing the policies and procedures of our district to ensure that they met their legal obligations for the health and safety of the LGBTQ+ community. This year I worked on the Grievance, Finance, LGBTQ+, and Resolutions committees, giving me a deep understanding of the needs and concerns of our members and their union. I believe that our union’s primary role is to advocate for our members and I want to contribute as your Member at Large.
