STA members received an email from Surrey School IMS on January 18 or 19 asking them to complete an assignment for Cyber Security Training. Although this may have looked like spam to many of our members, it was not. Unfortunately, the email did not reference the Weekly Memo from January 4 alerting members that they would be receiving this email.

The STA has been working with the district and other employee groups within Surrey Schools since February 2021 on the challenges of Cyber Security in an organization with over 10,000 employees.  To manage the security risks over time, all staff will have training opportunities such as the one sent out on January 19, 2022.  The terminology for each learning module within the system is an ‘assignment’.   If you haven’t had the chance to compete the assignment by the ‘Due date’, all that happens is that the system will generate a reminder and give you more time to complete it.

The STA’s position is that these in-service opportunities should take place during work time such as during a staff meeting, however, this “assignment” shouldn’t take more than 10 minutes or so to complete. We will continue to work with the district to ensure that any further communications about this are clearer.
