Rally around our Surrey schools: Thursday November 24, 2011

On Thursday November 24, Surrey teachers rallied around their schools to support current phase one job action and to increase public awareness of education issues facing our schools.

“This event highlighted the value of our neighbourhood schools where students feel safe and are respected as individual; a place where they start building their future. The productive futures for all students depend on a community showing the will to protect the value of public education”, said Surrey Teachers’ Association president, Denise Moffatt.

The stripping of teachers’ contracts through Bills 27 and 28 has removed the learning conditions that essentially guaranteed that all students in BC would have an equal opportunity for all students to experience success.

The stripping of class?size and composition language from collective agreements has resulted in a huge shift of funding away from education, resulting in increased class size and less support for students.

Moffatt emphasized; “The majority of British Columbians believe it is important to have a teachers’ contract that protects learning conditions for students. This government needs to demonstrate a will to restore the collective agreement language which guaranteed a student’s right to learning conditions that would enable every student to succeed.”

In this current round of bargaining, the Liberal government has not demonstrated any intention of bargaining in a meaningful manner. Coming empty?handed to the table is no way to negotiate a collective agreement.

BC teachers have been very clear from the beginning of the bargaining process. We are determined to achieve a negotiated collective agreement that includes:
• Teaching conditions that support all students.
• A fair and reasonable a salary increase and benefits which includes prep time.
• Local solutions for local problems.
