Provincial Day of Action Surrey Rally

Following school based “Day of Action” events, Surrey teachers will be holding a rally of members from 3:00pm to 5:00pm on Monday, February 27, 2012.

The location is:
Agriplex on the Cloverdale Rodeo and Exhibition Grounds- 6050A – 176 Street, Surrey

This is an opportunity for teachers to send a strong message to government that legislation of a contract is not acceptable and to demonstrate teacher unity.

Speakers will include:
Jim Sinclair, President, BC Federation of Labour
Iglika Ivanova, Public Interest Researcher with the BC CCPA
Denise Moffatt, President, Surrey Teachers’ Association

There will also be speakers from the BCTF and CUPE.

“Last April, the BC Supreme Court found that ten years ago this government had acted illegally and unconstitutionally when it imposed legislation that stripped out negotiated language from teachers’ collective agreement,” said Denise Moffatt, President of the Surrey Teachers’ Association. “Now, Minister Abbott says his government will legislate again. When will they learn?”

“Teachers make a difference in classrooms every day,” said Moffatt. “All we are asking for is to be treated respectfully by our employer and government. It is time teachers got a fair deal.”
