STA Office- New Receptionist
Carly Coupe, our new (as of last fall) receptionist, went on maternity leave at the end of June. Carly and baby are doing well and we wish her well as she takes this time with her new bundle of joy! We are also pleased to welcome Dana Ionescu into our office while Carly is away this year. Dana is in the office starting this week. Please, join us in welcoming Dana to the position for the year! Any inquiries that you would normally have sent to Cindy or Carly as our STA receptionists, you can now send to Dana but for simplicity, we will continue to use Carly’s email address: carly@surreyteachers.org

STA Parking Lot being repaved this week!
Please note that the STA parking lot is being repaved Monday and Tuesday this week, as per the Capital Assets Plan that was approved at our AGM in May. If you’ve been to the office at any point last year, you might have noticed the sinkhole, many cracks and other issues that were more than cosmetic fixes. Were you thinking of popping by Mon. or Tues.? If so, you may want to wait until Wednesday to come in. If you DO need to come in before Wed., give us a call (604) 594-5353 and we can give you some options for parking.

World Teachers’ Day –Save the Date! October 5
Let’s celebrate World Teachers’ Day together! World Teachers’ Day is coming up on Wednesday Oct. 5th. Please save the date. Stay tuned to future Monday Memos for more details about an STA event.

Election of STA Staff Representatives
A reminder that once you’ve had your election for various STA positions, it’s imperative that you please fill out the school information form indicating all of the various STA positions, and send it to the STA office. Please endeavor to complete these elections before the first STARA meeting on Sept. 21 at Eaglequest. If you require childcare, please contact Donna Stewart at dstewart@surreyteachers.org

Please be advised that if no staff rep is elected at your workplace, the STA will be sending a letter to your administrator advising them that the STA table officers will be the staff reps at your school and will attend meetings with administration, as well as holding union meetings at the school.

Rookie Staff Rep Training
Each new (or relatively new) staff rep is eligible to attend one day of rookie staff rep training, in addition to the regular staff rep training. Rookie sessions will be held on SEPTEMBER 19th and OCTOBER 3rd. Please see attached flyer for more information, and registration links. Please register ASAP because space is limited.

Staff Rep Training: First Session
All Staff Reps (including those doing rookie training) please register for the BCTF’s revised school union rep training workshop “BCTF Code of Ethics: Understanding the Professional Relationship”. Select ONE of the following dates: October 4th, 5th, 6th, 11th, 12th, or 13th. Please use the link in the flyer to register for the date that works best for you. (Note: A few staff reps have had trouble selecting the proper Collective Agreement Article when booking the LOA online. It is likely because you are selecting “STA Business” for your leave. Please select “STARA” as your option, and you will then find the correct leave article.)

Grievance
Classes Over 30
This is a reminder of the November 2015 Representative Assembly decision with regard to class size grievances for 2016–17:

1. That locals file Step 3 Section 76.1(2) grievances for all classes over 30.
2. That locals advise teachers not to accept the Ministry “cash for kids” scheme, additional compensation, for classes over 30.
3. That the remedy for any oversize class be:
a. additional teaching staff, or
b. additional preparation time.

What does that mean for you ? If your class is not on the exempted list and you have more than 30 students, we are asking that individual teachers to email Sue Heuman ASAP grieve@surreyteachers.org. If you are asked to attend a consultation meeting with your principal, please inform him or her that you will be following the union’s grievance process and do not fill out any district forms.

Transfer Grievances
If you applied for a position in Rounds 1 or 2 and did not get an interview despite being more senior than the person who was awarded the position, please contact Joanna Cerazy, Grievance Officer at 604 5945353 or grv-spt@surreyteachers.org.

What Information Can Be Shared About Student History Regarding Violence?
As the new school year begins and new students transfer into schools and classrooms, a question often arises: “What information can be shared about student history regarding violence?” Please read the attached WCB Bulletin (WS 2013-05) “Communicate student information: Prevent violence-related injuries to workers in the education sector”. This bulletin discusses the worker’s right to know and the employer’s obligation for keeping workers safe. The bulletin also talks about how the right to know fits in with the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, Teacher Regulation Branch, and codes of conduct. If you have any questions regarding this document feel free to contact the STA.

Teachers on Recall
If you are still awaiting recall, and a position you are qualified to teach is posted in a staff bulletin, contact Steve Hardy (Secondary teachers) or Chris Stanger (Elementary teachers) and let them know that you have the necessary qualifications for the available position. Please, contact Joanna Cerazy, grv-spt@surreyteachers.org Sue Heuman grieve@surreyteachers.org or Kristine Olsen, grv-hs@surreyteachers.org STA grievance officers, if you have questions about this process.

TTOC Hours/Contract Hours Incremental Increases
The STA has been negotiating with the district to allow an extension for contract teachers to meld their TTOC days to earn an incremental increase for September 1. The deadline was by June 30th, 2016 and a few teachers had missed the deadline. The district will not grant an extension.
The next incremental increase will be January 1, 2017. Contract teachers should have their form (attached) into Payroll no later than November 15, 2016 in order to have their increase on January 1,2017. If you have any questions, please contact Sue Heuman at the STA.

Social Justice
Speaking out for Public Education

A HUGE announcement from the Province this week as all anti-bullying policies across this B.C., in both public and independent schools, will reflect explicit references to sexual orientation and gender identity. Check out the CBC’s article:B.C. anti-bullying policies to reflect all colours of the rainbow.

It’s not enough to be against bullying of LGBTQ peoples. As you start your new year, this is a great time to be thinking about the ways in which your practice can be welcoming and inclusive of your LGBTQ students. How can you support queer youth in your classes? QMUNITY published a great article that includes ideas from LGBTQ youth themselves. My favorite idea is to start assuming that there are LGBTQ youth in all your classes and to actively include their stories and histories into our teaching.

Joke of the week
A husband went out to buy his wife some flowers. The cashier commented on how lovely they were. He replied that they were for his wife’s birthday.
She asked, “Oh! That’s nice! How old is she turning?”
He replied, “I don’t know. It changes every year.”

This week’s joke was submitted by Samantha Lorber. If you would like to participate in joke of the week, please submit a short, clean, (but non necessarily education-related) joke to Gioia Breda at pres@surreyteachers.org. If your joke is drawn for publication, your name will then be entered into a draw for a gift card at the end of the month!
