Staff Rep Training–Possible third session of rookie training
We are delighted at how many new people have volunteered to serve as staff reps. We had 46 members sign up for rookie staff rep training on September 19 and October 3. We also have some newer reps who were unable to get into these sessions. If we have enough additional people who still wish to attend rookie training, we will hold another rookie session. If you are a new(ish) staff rep and were unable to register, please contact Matt Westphal at Please still register for one of the regular sessions, even if you did not do the rookie training.

STA Survey on Assessment and Reporting Practices
The STA is interested in hearing from membership regarding assessment and reporting. Please take a few minutes this week to participate in our anonymous survey. We are interested in hearing about your questions, comments, and concerns both positive and negative. What has been working for you? What has been challenging? Your input is valuable to us and allows us to serve you better. Thank you for taking the time to participate.

We are now accepting applications from beginning and experienced teachers for our mentorship program. Please see the attachment for more information on our redesigned STA/SD36 Mentorship program.

DVDs available to be borrowed!
Did you know the STA International Solidarity committee has a mini video library on Social Justice themes that any Surrey teacher can borrow? Some teachers show them to their classes and others just borrow them for home use. All you have to do is browse the film list on our wiki choose a DVD or more than one that you want to borrow, and then email Julia MacRae at Fraser Heights Secondary and she will pop it in the courier to you at your school. After a couple of weeks you can send it back the same way.

Why not check out one of our newest films such as He Named Me Malala, or This Changes Everything!

Curriculum Non-Instructional Day – November 4, 2016

Call for Resolutions
The deadline for resolutions to the BCTF Annual General Meeting is mid-December. The first meeting of the STA Resolutions Committee is October 12th. Please see the attached form for more information about the call for resolutions, the Resolutions Committee, and the form for submitting a resolution for consideration to the committee. If there are things that you would like to see the BCTF do, or you have an idea for how to improve the BCTF, this is one way to try to make that happen.

October 21st Provincial Specialist Association Day
Pro-D.jpgIt’s time to register for your October 21st PSA Conference and there are many excellent choices. Take a look at the choice of 32 Provincial Specialist Association Conferences here and choose the one that’s right for you. October 21st is one of your 5 teacher-directed professional development days. While you aren’t required to attend a PSA Conference, it is strongly encouraged. PSA Conferences are a great opportunity to participate in meaningful professional development planned and directed by teachers.

Teachers can apply for up to $350 in Consolidated Funds for pro-d events once every two years. Consolidated funds are a great way to pay for PSA workshops, and can also be used for travel and accommodation expenses for out of town events. Consolidated funds are approved on a first-come, first served basis, and applications for consolidated funds for PSA conferences are always approved, so you don’t have to wait for pre-approval before you register for your PSA. Register now! PSA conferences fill up quickly! Your school PD rep can tell you how to apply for consolidated funds (directly to the STA office), and will also let you know if you can apply for PD funds through your school.
