 Curriculum Implementation

As we approach the first of our two days for working on curriculum implementation, a reminder to members that at this time, there is no official change to reporting.  Although many teachers are using FreshGrade, or moving to some other portfolio style assessment model, there is no requirement, at this time, to make any changes to your assessment.  The STA advice is to focus on the new curriculum and wait for the new reporting orders to be written, before adding additional work in changing you style of reporting.  As well, many teachers are feeling pressured to change their teaching style, along with implementing the new curriculum.  A reminder that you are not required to change you teaching style.  Teachers have autonomy over how they teach.  The new curriculum may allow for the use of personalized learning or inquiry based learning, but teachers should not feel pressured to use these teaching methods.  For now, our focus should be on the new curriculum.

The BC Teachers’ Federation is seeking 24 elementary school representatives and 12 alternates to serve on the Ministry of Education’s  Provincial Assessment Development Team. Below is a  link to the posting and BCTF CV form:

Speaking up about Public Education:

Despite the assertion from former Minister of Education Peter Fassbender, teachers know that class size matters a lot! Follow the link to a Washington Post article discussing the research findings that support what we know. There are great sound bites for sharing on social media such as, “The payoff from class-size reduction is greater for low-income and minority children, while any increases in class size will likely be most harmful to these populations.”

 Surrey International Children’s Festival

School and group tickets for the 2016 Surrey International Children’s Festival are now on sale. The 2016 Festival theme is “Come Share Your Stories!” which encourages children and families to share their stories about the first time they were inspired by an artistic experience.
