Monday Memo – March 7, 2011

MEMO TO: Staff Reps

COPIES TO: STA Executive Committee

FROM: Denise Moffatt, President

Date: March 7, 2011

“X” Blocks
The Union’s position is that no teacher can be required to work on a split shift. In the past, some teachers have “volunteered” to work an X block. However, teachers must not be “assigned” to a schedule that exceeds the limits in the collective agreement. If you have been directed to teach an X block, and your schedule would exceed 6.5 hours in a secondary school, please contact the STA office so we can defend your rights.

School funding on its way?
Students, parents, and teachers have been advocating for the construction of new schools in Surrey. The pressure is finally paying off. Liberal MLAs, Kevin Falcon and Gordon Hogg have come out publicly and agrees new schools are needed. Teachers at Earl Marriott and Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary schools played a critical part of raising awareness about this issue and we should all be proud of their effort and solidarity. Bargaining tables open!
The first meeting with the school board will occur on March 9, 2011. We are all very excited as this is the first time local tables have opened in Surrey in a long time.

Job Share submission day extended to April 4, 2011.
