Monday Memo – June 6, 2011

MEMO TO: Staff Reps

COPIES TO: STA Executive Committee

FROM: Denise Moffatt, President

Date: June 6, 2011

Local Bargaining Update – Although the parties have continued to meet, there has been no progress at the local table. We let the employer know that due to the lack of progress, there will be a strike vote at the end of the month. We encouraged them to revise their mandate so that bargaining would be more productive.

Provincial Bargaining Update – BCTF and BCPSEA met for their 14th bargaining session on June 2nd, 2011. The BCTF started the meeting by tabling our benefits proposal. A number of questions were asked and answered about the proposal. Later in the meeting, Jim Iker asked BCPSEA a number of questions related to their mandate and ability/authority to bargain a collective agreement with us. Three of the questions are as follows:

Does BCPSEA have the authority and ability to negotiate increased compensation without any offsets or concessions to the collective agreement?
Does the cost of any improvements to the collective agreement have to be offset by any concessions?
We understand that you are unable to negotiate a reduction in material management rights. Is that correct?

BCPSEA would not answer the questions directly. The next scheduled meeting is June 7, 2011. At that session, parties will continue to table proposals.

School Visits – Those few remaining schools who have not yet booked their bargaining school visit – time is running out. It is critical that we reach all school sites prior to June 24. Contact Momina Rafiq on First Class to book your school’s visit.

Phase 1 Job Action Questions – The STA is compiling a list of Q and As regarding Phase 1 based on questions raised by members at school visits. We’re asking Staff Reps to send us questions about the Phase 1 job action as soon as possible so we can provide more detail to members. Please send all questions from your school’s staff to Momina Rafiq on First Class.

Retirement Dinner – The STA Retirement Dinner is being held at Eaglequest Golf Centre on Friday, June 17th. Spaces are still available. If you, or someone you know, is retiring this year, please contact Lorna Sheh on First Class.

Provincial Strike Vote June 24th, 27th, 28th, 2011 – Notice of time and location to follow.
