Monday Memo – June 13, 2011

Memo to: Staff Reps

Copies to: STA Executive Committee

From: Jennifer Wadge, Second Vice President

Date: June 13, 2011

Provincial Bargaining Report - BCTF and BCPSEA met for their 16th bargaining session on June 8, 2011.

We tabled our proposal on duration of the instructional day. We answered questions regarding the proposal as well as questions on preparation time.

BCPSEA tabled language on alternate school calendar and preparation time. Their latest proposals again contain concessions. Their proposal on alternate school calendar would limit what is grievable and arbitrable. BCPSEA’s proposal on preparation time contains no improvements and seeks to eliminate weekly prep time. They also presented a document titled “Baseline costing data.”

We questioned whether the new government representative Claire Avison was in a conflict position as she is also responsible for independent schools.

The next scheduled meeting is Monday, June 13, 2011. At that session, we will continue addressing questions on this past week’s proposals re: hours of work language. BCPSEA will table proposals they have quantified as substantive. Does that represent further substantive concessions? Stay tuned.

School Visits - Those few remaining schools who have not yet booked their bargaining school visit – time is running out. It is critical that we reach all school sites prior to June 24. Contact Momina Rafiq on First Class to book your school’s visit.

Phase 1 Job Action Questions – The BCTF Executive Committee and the STA Executive Committee have both discussed issues around phase 1 job action, in order to provide members with details. The STA is compiling a list of Q and As regarding Phase 1 based on questions raised by members at school visits. We’re asking Staff Reps to send us questions about the Phase 1 job action as soon as possible so we can provide more detail to members. Please send all questions from your school’s staff to Momina Rafiq on First Class.

Retirement Dinner – The STA Retirement Dinner is being held at Eaglequest Golf Centre this Friday, June 17th. Spaces are still available. If you, or someone you know, is retiring this year, please contact Lorna Sheh on First Class.

Provincial Strike Vote June 24th, 27th, 28th, 2011 – The STA Local Returning Officer is working to coordinate locations for the vote. We will provide you with the times and locations of polling stations as soon as they are determined.
