Welcome Back and Happy New Year!
From everyone at the STA office, welcome back and all the best for 2014.

Special General Meeting
The STA Special General Meeting will take place on January 22nd at the Bombay Banquet Hall. At the meeting, we will be electing delegates to the BCTF Annual General Meeting. All members are welcome to attend, vote and eat butter chicken. The meeting starts at 4:00 pm. Come out and see your union in action!

Surrey Delegates to the BCTF Annual General Meeting
The BCTF Annual General Meeting will take place from March 15-18 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Vancouver. Each year, over 750 delegates from around the province attend the BCTF AGM. It is a great opportunity to see how the BCTF operates and to hear new perspectives on important issues. Surrey is able to send up to 60 delegates. Delegates will be elected at the January 23 Special General Meeting. If you are interested in becoming a delegate, you can submit your name and a brief statement to Gioia Breda or sta@surreyteachers.org. Please submit your statement by Monday, January 14. Hotel accommodation and expenses are covered by the BCTF.

Turkey Draw Winner
Congratulations to Derek Imai, James Ardiel Elementary, on winning the turkey at the December STARA meeting.

Surrey Primary Teachers’ Workshops
The SPTA is hosting two upcoming workshops during January. Mark your calendars for:

“Dance for Primary Students” with Judy Chase (Herridge) on Wednesday, January 22nd at White Rock Elementary beginning at 3:30 p.m. Come out and learn some easy and effective strategies for teaching dance to your primary students. Simple, creative, folk and line dances will be taught, as well as ideas to take a dance to the performance level.

Back by popular demand, “The Canadian Cousins present Their Daily 5” on Wednesday, January 29th at Hillcrest beginning at 3:30 p.m. This is a repeat session of a workshop presented in late November. Learn about “The Daily 5” literacy framework, and how to help your students develop the daily habits of reading, writing and working independently to build strong literacy skills.

You can register for either of these workshops at: www.spta36.weebly.com/workshops

Joke of the Week
Evidence has been found that William Tell and his family were avid bowlers. Unfortunately, all the Swiss bowling league records were destroyed in a fire, so we’ll never know for whom the Tells bowled.

This week’s joke was submitted by Karen Morley, South Surrey/White Rock Learning Centre. If you have a (clean but not necessarily teacher related) joke, please send it to pres@surreyteachers.org. If your joke is selected, your name will be entered into a draw for a gift card. The draw will take place at the end of this month.

Joke of the Week Winner
Congratulations to Sharon Sall, Princess Margaret Secondary! A $25 gift card will be sent to you at your school in the courier.
