Teachers who have recently acquired qualifications for specialist positions in the Job Description handbook, or who want to have experience or qualifications recognized for new types of classroom positions should ensure they are recognized as qualified. The Job Description Handbook and the ‘threshold agreement’ for Generic Postings for Elementary and Secondary positions can be seen on the SD 36 Website, click on Human Resources, Job Description Handbook or Transfer Information, Generic Postings for Elementary and Secondary. Threshold Qualifications Application can be found on First Class, click on Staff Conferences, District Departments, Human Resources, Teachers (HR Info).

Merit payLiberal MLA, Kevin Falcon announced this week that as part of his platform he intends to explore the idea of merit pay for master teachers. Ironically this idea is transported from countries like the US and Australia where students do not perform as well as Canadian students. This is another attack on teachers and public education and shows Falcon’s lack of understanding of education. Perhaps Mr. Falcon could focus on real issues, like the lack of classroom space in Surrey. To view a critique and summary of various merit pay initiatives go to www.surreyteachers.org/documents/Teacherbonuscritique.pdf

PISA rankings show that Canadian education is a top performer. http://www.pisa.oecd.org/dataoecd/54/12/46643496.pdf
