Extended Days:
Several Surrey schools have been identified for extended school days because of overcrowding. The STA executive will make the following recommendation to the January 26th general meeting.

That the STA oppose the Surrey School District’s extended day proposal.

At some schools principals have attempted to initiate committees, meetings and informal discussion with teachers about the proposal. However, the school district has not yet met with the union to discuss its plan. The appropriate method of gathering information from teachers about working conditions is through the union and the STA has grieved the Board’s actions. We encourage teachers to attend the January 26th general meeting to express their views about extended days to address overcrowding. Additionally, STA officers will be requesting meetings with staff at affected schools.

Snow FAQ:
• Are teachers expected to shovel snow?
It is the STA position that you are not required to shovel walks or parking lots.

• If teachers voluntarily assist with winter tasks such as shovelling snow etc. are they covered in the event of an injury?
Before you begin to shovel at a school site, you should notify your Principal of the work you intend to do. If your Principal consents to this work, it will help to ensure that you are covered by WCB. Your Principal should enquire about his/her responsibility in this area.

Please don’t mark the FSA
Notice regarding marking the FSA has been sent out to school over the last week. This is an optional activity so please remember it is BCTF policy that teachers do not mark the FSA.

STA Bargaining Objectives to be set next week:
At the January 26th general meeting STA members will endorse local bargaining objectives. The bargaining table opens on March 1st, 2011, only a few weeks from now. We hope to see a good turnout at the meeting to debate these important objectives.

AGM delegates will be elected at general meeting:
Delegates to the BCTF AGM will also be elected at the January 26th general meeting. If you would like to run for one of the available spaces be sure to get your name to Lorna Sheh and to attend the meeting.
