Lessons Learned, Bargaining in the 21st Century

As the expiration of our collective agreement draws near, a Special Members-Only discussion will be held on April 13th that will feature a four-member panel of former Surrey Teachers’ Association bargainers. They will discuss the history of teacher collective bargaining from a Surrey perspective, and the challenges that lie ahead. A Q&A period will follow for those who wish to direct questions to the panel members or to share thoughts and ideas. Panel will feature: Moira Mackenzie, Brian Porter, David Chudnovsky and Margie Willers.
Email Donna Stewart via First Class to reserve your space.

College Fee increase carried – College fees will increase from $90 to $120 next year. Despite opposition from many elected councillors, the fee increase carried at the April 1st meeting.

Layoff Notices issued today – The layoff dates is May 14, 2009. Teachers will be receiving notices today. This is a stressful time for many teachers so please support them. There will be a layoff meeting on June 2, 2011. Please contact Lori Wilson at the STA office if you need assistance.

Educational Needs – The District’s Transfer Timelines for this year require that Principals consult with Staff Committees regarding Educational Program Needs between April 4 and April 11.

This consultation must include discussion regarding the identification of vacancies, and the content of postings proposed to fill vacancies in Round 1. (The STA also maintains there should be wider discussion regarding Educational Program Needs. See attachments. If you did not receive an example of the criteria used at your school last year at Staff Rep training, please contact Lorna Sheh at the STA.)

This year, we anticipate that some principals may identify vacancies which include a requirement to teach a block outside of the regular school schedule.
