Memo – January 3, 2012

MEMO TO: Staff Reps

COPIES TO: STA Executive Committee

FROM: Denise Moffatt, President

Date: January 3, 2012

Welcome Back
We hope you have all enjoyed a restful and relaxing holiday.

Ad Campaign
The STA and several other Lower Mainland locals will be working on a joint media campaign to support our bargaining and class size and composition objectives later this month.  STARA adopted a motion and set the budget for the campaign at its December meeting.  The campaign will include radio, bus ads, electronic bulletin boards and ad bars at grocery stores.  The campaign will complement media being produced in print, on TV and the internet by the BCTF. More details to come.

Second Semester Start-up
Currently, there is no start-up time in the job action plan for second semester. This means that teachers and counselors should not be assisting with timetable adjustments or other work required for transition to semester 2.  We anticipate there will be a conversation between BCTF and BCPSEA on this matter this month but our current advice is that the order only specified September and that administrators should be taking the responsibility for this work at this time.

Ready, Set, Learn
Teachers may continue to participate in Ready, Set, Learn provided that the event occurs during the school day and that teachers are provided release time both for preparation and the event. Teachers will not be sitting on joint committees with administration if that was part of your previous practice.

Ministry of Education Committees
Reminder during the job action teachers are not to apply for or sit on Ministry of Education committees.

Buttons
Teacher may wear “Proud to be a Teacher” or “I am the BCTF” buttons at school.  Teachers may also wear the older version of the “Kids matter, Teachers Care” buttons. However, the employer is continuing to take issue with the buttons that say “Taking a Stand.”

New Teachers’ Conference and Induction
Beginning teachers, in their first or second year of teaching, who haven’t attended in the past, are encouraged to attend the New Teachers’ Conference and Induction on Thursday, January 19th, from 8:30 am to 2:45 pm at the Guildford Sheraton.  Please email Cindy Tierney at ctierney @sd36.bc.ca to register.

Sad News
Charlene Watts, a BCTF workshop presenter, was killed over the holidays when a semi trailer crossed the line and struck her vehicle on icy roads near Quesnel.  Some of you may remember Charlene because we were fortunate to have had her provide staff rep training earlier this year.  She will be missed greatly.
