February 10th Professional Development Workshops

Teacher-to-Teacher edcamp

edcamp is an organic, democratic, participant-driven pro-d. There are no keynote presentations, there is no formal preset agenda, and participants set the course of the day. Participants at edcamp are encouraged to contribute ideas in workshops and are invited to share a short presentation or propose a question. Workshops are interactive, conversation-driven and not typical lecture style presentations. Topics may include digital literacy, epubs, digital storytelling, assessment for learning, social media, classroom inquiry, differentiated instruction, and student engagement. Dr. Gabor Mate speaks to Elementary and Secondary Counselors

Dr. Mate has spent many years examining the epidemic of addiction in our society and trying to discover what is needed to liberate ourselves from those addictions. His latest book, In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts: Close Encounters with Addiction examines these topics in depth and offers insight into the world of the addict and the challenges of addiction. Topics to be covered: What is the source of addictions? How early childhood experiences shape the brain. How can professionals working in schools with young people intervene to support them?

Poetry workshop with writer Taryn Hubbard

This workshop will examine current trends in poetry while exploring and sharing our experiences in Surrey. We will look at the different ways our community affects our creative practices. Bring photos documenting your life in Surrey and any poems you’ve already written that were inspired by Surrey.
